Business administrator, Tasmia Choudhury represented Facilities Services at a job fair hosted by the University’s neighbor, the Apostolic Church of God located at 6320 S. Dorchester Avenue. The church’s career development ministry has been hosting the job fair for several years. Demetrius Barbee who has volunteered the past three years said, “The University of Chicago is the most sought out table,” at the fair. About 40 vendors, including UChicago Medicine participated at the fair. The goal of the fair was to pair job seekers with organizations in an informal setting to promote networking skills, career growth and employment opportunities.
In addition to being present at the FS table, Choudhury spoke at a special informational session. The Art Institute of Chicago also gave a similar informational session. Choudhury gave an overview of FS and provided information on the hiring and recruiting process. One job seeker asked, is it a myth or truth that in order to be hired by the University, “…you have to know someone?” The myth was dispelled as Choudhury explained that skillset is definitely a deciding factor and anyone who wants to be considered for a job should apply; “We accept all applicants.” If an applicant knows someone already employed by the University, the applicant can ask for a referral. This job fair is one way of matching diverse qualified candidates to open positions.
Choudhury made the University’s presence known. She met with individuals one on one, collected resumes, answered questions and handed out pamphlets that included information about FS and seven current open full time regular positions.
