After 30 years of service, Monica Racean retires from The University of Chicago

Monica Racean, Manager, Finance Special Projects for Finance and Business Services retired from the University of Chicago after 30 years of service. Although she spent the last four years of her career in Facilities Services, it all started in 1988 in the comptroller’s office. She started her career at the end of the fiscal year and Racean recalled working with FS ledgers from day one. Before acquiring her position in FS, Racean worked in a small group for the University. The staff dwindled and dwindled until it was eventually reduced to Racean and a part time employee who reported to her. Knowing that this would be her career choice since the eighth grade, it’s no wonder she persevered for three decades.

Getting to this place in her career was by no means an easy task. Racean, who immigrated from Romania at the age of 18 suffered at the hands of the Romanian government. As a form of punishment for leaving the country, she was denied her high school diploma. Determined to live out her dreams, she learned the English language and earned a degree in accounting from Roosevelt University. Just weeks after earning her college degree, Racean began her journey at The University of Chicago.

Throughout the years, Racean was committed and dependable. Whether it was work late or take time away from her family and call in for a meeting, she did what was necessary to ensure the job was done. She was instrumental in managing capital planning, cash flows, consolidated financial reporting, consolidated budget uploads and other special financial projects.

In a farewell note to her colleagues, Racean thanked them for helping to create what she called such a satisfying and pleasant work environment. She’s looking forward to the next chapter of her life which includes spending time with her family and caring for her daughter Cassie.
