The University of Chicago Architecture Awards

On behalf of the University of Chicago, Angela Knoble, Facilities Services project manager, and representatives from FARR Associates and Mortensen Construction accepted awards at the American Institute of Architects Chicago (AIA Chicago) annual award gala held at Navy Pier this fall. AIA Chicago hosted the 2019 Design Excellence Awards, the annual award program which honors both international projects completed by Chicago-based architectural firms and projects completed in Chicago by national and international firms. Annually, projects are selected based upon jury consideration of the project concept, design execution, achievement of difficult program goals, originality of design, and image. This year’s award program was especially significant because it marks the 150th anniversary of AIA Chicago, the second largest AIA chapter in the country.

The Keller Center received awards in the Distinguished Building and Interior Architecture categories. The Keller Center received the Honor Award in the Distinguished Building for the preservation and restoration of the historic 1964 Edward Durrell Stone building on Campus South, and the Keller Center received the Honor Award in Interior Design for the four-story atrium and monumental forum staircase. The transformational interior and exterior designs integrate policy-inspired solutions to better connect with the community, place policy on display and serve as an exemplar in sustainable design.

The Michelson Center for Physics received the Merit Award in the Distinguished Building category for the elegant expansion and modernization of a two-story, rigorously symmetrical, midcentury building. The design, which includes a two-story expansion and a comprehensive gut renovation, extends the life of the monolithic building by transforming it into a collaborative, future-forward facility.
