When Patrice Jackson enrolled in the Associate Degree Program through the University of Chicago Facilities Services in partnership with the City Colleges of Chicago as our inaugural student, she set her sights on a goal that had long been on her heart: finishing what she -started. Now, having proudly earned her associate in arts with a focus on Economics, she has not only completed that journey - but she’s also laid the groundwork for so much more.
As a groundskeeper with the Landscape Services team at the University of Chicago, Patrice brings care and precision to the campus environment every day. That same focus fueled her commitment to academics. Balancing her full-time role with classes, Patrice made strategic choices - taking online and Zoom-based courses to maintain flexibility and cutting back on overtime so she could prioritize learning.
“I really just wanted to get it done,” Patrice said. “I only had a few classes left, and I knew getting that degree would make me better - not just at work, but overall.” Her motivation was personal and purposeful: to build on the 13 credits she had already earned and to expand her knowledge in business and economics. The moment she received her degree marked a turning point.
“My proudest moment was just finishing what I started,” she reflected. “Completing the course and getting that degree - that meant everything.”
Through the Associate Degree Program - a unique partnership that started back in 2021 supports Facilities Services employees with tuition assistance, schedule flexibility, and academic guidance - Patrice found not just opportunity, but inspiration. Now, she’s looking toward the future, exploring bachelor’s programs. “This degree has opened the door to something new,” she said. “I feel like I’m just getting started.” This tailormade program helps employees by offering virtual and on-demand learning.
To anyone considering taking a similar path, Patrice offers a message of encouragement: “Follow your dreams and be who you want to be. Be more than you are. Pursue your goals - you’ll surprise yourself with what you can accomplish.” If you are interested in learning more about the program, please contact our Facilities Services Human Resources team at fshr@uchicago.edu.
From beautifying campus grounds to achieving academic success, Patrice Jackson is a shining example of how passion, perseverance, and institutional support can come together to transform lives - one class, one goal, one dream at a time.
