As a result of recommendations made by the University of Chicago’s Gender Inclusive Restrooms Working Group (GIRWG), many single-user restrooms on campus are eligible to be updated with all-gender restroom signage. This initiative supports the University’s ongoing commitment to fostering a welcoming and safe environment for all members of the campus community.
UChicago has adopted a new campus sign standard for gender-inclusive restrooms that are currently identified with signs as single-user restrooms:
For existing single-user restrooms, unit administrators may request replacement signs that follow the new ALL GENDER RESTROOM standard by completing the sign request form and submitting the request to Facilities Services.
PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT CURRENT BUILDING CODES ALLOW ONLY SINGLE USER RESTROOMS TO BE DESIGNATED AS ALL GENDER.

Planning staff is available to consult with project managers, facilities managers and external consultants about the design and installation of new signage.
Color of new signs will be the current campus standard Lead Grey (MP18145) or will match the color of existing signs in the building unless the current campus standard color is requested for the new signs.
Units requesting sign replacements will be charged for the cost of the new ALL GENDER RESTROOM sign, and for installation costs that will vary based on the needed touch up patching and painting, and on installation scheduling and conditions. Please note that upon initial consultation, Facilities Services may identify additional restroom enhancements that need to be made in order to meet GIRWG standards, such as making sure each restroom has a functional lock, etc. Should other improvements be needed, Facilities Services will follow up with you to discuss and will provide you with an additional estimate.
