Campus South Mixed Use Facility

Overview

The University of Chicago Campus South Mixed Use Facility will be a 4-level parking structure with 323 parking spaces, a parking office, elevator lobbies, a meeting/community room, and support space for the adjacent field located on the ground floor.

The primary vehicle ingress and egress will be located on the north side of the site and will be aligned with Kimbark Avenue, a vacated street. Secondary vehicle ingress and egress will be located off 61st Street. The main pedestrian entrance for the new parking structure will be an elevator lobby at the northwest corner, conveniently located to serve the new David Rubenstein Forum conference center and Study Hotel. The pedestrian entrance for the parking office will be located at the north façade, the point of entry for the meeting room on the south face, and all entrances for the remaining support spaces on the west elevation.

The height of the proposed structure will be 51’–1” tall and clad with a rhythmic vertical metal panel that provides a texture to the building volume while allowing for natural ventilation for the parking floors required by code. The massing of the building will provide a transition from the university campus to the residential district south of 61stStreet. This is accomplished by the height being more closely aligned with the residential buildings on 61st Street. The material's colors have been chosen to integrate the structure into the surrounding academic and residential context by drawing from the warm natural color of the limestone found in wall panels and accent stones throughout the community. This project will generate approximately 400 temporary construction jobs over a 10-month period.

In order to make way for this new facility, a single-story building known as the Campus South Athletics building (1,256 GSF) will be demolished.

Project Updates

Construction enabling activities including utility work along Kimbark Ave started in the middle of July. Site mobilization activities will continue through the end of August and likely into September. This work is in preparation for the new construction planned at the site starting later this year for the Mixed Use Facility.

The demolition contractor is scheduled to mobilize at 6047 S. Kimbark Ave on Tuesday, Aug. 31, and demolishing of the athletics building will start on the 31st. The daily working hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

During the enabling work, the campus community can expect the following:

  • Parking will be restricted along Kimbark Avenue between 60th and 61st streets for the duration of the demolition and utility work. Traffic will be reduced to one lane.
  • Dust control measures will be implemented.
  • Daily working hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. No weekend work is expected for August.
