FACILITY SUMMARY

Drawing of Midway Plaisance

The Midway Plaisance is a key open space component for the University of Chicago as it bisects the campus and provides numerous recreational opportunities not ordinarily found in an urban university. A Master Plan for the Midway Plaisance, commissioned by the University of Chicago and the Chicago Park District, was developed by Olin Partners and completed in 2000. From that plan the first two major gardens have been developed and installed—the North Winter Garden and the Reader's Garden. The South Winter Garden is identified in the master plan, and is viewed as complementary to the North Winter Garden. The South Winter Garden will be located between the South Plaisance Drive and East 60th Street, from South Ellis Avenue to South Woodlawn Avenue.
