Sustainability office seeks volunteers for Avant Garden spring planting event

Spring into gardening season at the annual Avant Garden planting party next Wednesday, May 27 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Avant Garden, located on the east side of the Young Memorial Building, 5555 S. Ellis Ave.

Students, staff and faculty volunteers nurture the herbs and vegetables grown throughout the season, and the bounty provides a visible reminder of the continued importance of exploring the process of cultivation. Local gardening plays a critical role in better understanding sustainable food systems, and its relevance to the campus community and our own daily lives.

This year’s Avant Garden planting event is a part of the activities involved with Earth Fest, the largest green festival on campus. Volunteers who participate in the planting party will be entered into the Earth Fest raffle for a chance to win one of the following fabulous prizes:

  •  A Divvy membership through 2015
  • One pound of Intelligentsia coffee with Hario Skerton ceramic mill and Chemex coffee maker and filters
  • Planet Bike ALX Deluxe Aluminum Floor Pump + Kryptonite U-Lock
